Overweight Web Pages

We were recently asked to look at a Website created by another company. A quick look under the bonnet revealed poor technique where all the formating for the website was in the Web Page instead of the Style Sheet. That means all the styling is unnecessarily repeated on every single page.

We recreated the web page so it looked identical to the original.  Our page was just 4.06kb whereas their page was 8.29kb - half the size!

The three main advantages of using proper techniques is

  1. The pages loads twice as quick.
  2. There is less to go wrong, so sites become more consistent and error free.
  3. It is much quicker to change the appearance of a site as all the pages don't have to be changed individually.

Helpful Hint

Multi Section Website Architectures (like this one) allow larger websites to be organised better for easy navigation. Most websites are Single Section "ladder" sites (page links on the left-hand side like a ladder) with very long pages. Create a Section and break the long pages up into bite-sized pages that fit onto the screen.
